Mayor Cornett recognized Karl Hillerman, Empowerment Zone Chairman, who presented the “Outstanding Volunteer Award” to Councilman Sam Bowman for many years of service to the Oklahoma City community.
Mayor Cornett recognized Oklahoma City Police Lt. Robert B. Mercer. Lt. Mercer introduced several Italian Police Chiefs visiting Oklahoma City. Each Italian Police Chief presented Mayor Cornett with gifts from their cities.
Mayor Cornett recognized Ashley Perkins, Area Manager of External Affairs for SBC. Ms. Perkins talked about the tremendous growth and success with the “Downtown in December” events.

Mr. Marrs said he attended the National League of Cities Conference last week in Indianapolis, Indiana. He said it was his first time attending a National League of Cities conference and he felt reaffirmed that Oklahoma City is doing all the right things. He said Oklahoma City is in a league all its own and our municipal representatives should be teaching some of the sessions.
Mr. Bowman said he attended a re-opening celebration of a Family Dollar store at Britton Road and Western Avenue. He said Family Dollar noted there were no grocery stores in that immediate area so they decided to pilot a new concept altering its merchandise mix by dropping clothing and replacing it with grocery items. Mr. Bowman commended Family Dollar for their efforts.
Mr. Bowman announced that the Asian District has gone from an informal meeting format to a formal one complete with by-laws and officer elections. He commended Bob Meier, Planning Department, and Reverend Scott Keneda, Wesley United Methodist Church, for their leadership throughout this process.

Mr. McAtee said Earlywine Elementary School, 12800 South May Avenue, is looking for a school crossing guard. He said to call Mr. Bolen, Principal, at 692-5656 if you’re interested in serving in that capacity.
Mr. McAtee said he also attended the National League of Cities Conference last week. He thanked Ms. Simank and Ms. Johnson for sponsoring him to serve on the Human Development Committee. He said he was privileged to able to introduce proposals for creating programs that would honor veterans and for promoting abstinence as a way to combat the AIDS epidemic.
Mr. McAtee said he recently attended the Retired Firefighters Christmas party and the Windsor Hills Christmas party.
Ms. Simank said the National League of Cities Conference was wonderful. She thanked Ms. Johnson for her two years of service on the Board of Directors and congratulated her for joining the Advisory Board. She said the Advisory Board is a lifetime appointment.
Ms. Simank said she attended the Heronville Neighborhood Christmas luncheon last Wednesday in south Oklahoma City. She said there was a good turn out for the luncheon.
Ms. Simank said she participated in the Stockyards Christmas Parade on Saturday.
Ms. Simank said there is a planning meeting for SW 44th Street improvements tonight at the Integris Medical Office Building at SW 44th Street and Western Avenue. She said the meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. and she invited all interested parties to attend.
Ms. Simank said METRO Transit won three national awards last month. She said they took home all the top honors at the 16th Annual Spotlight Awards during the Annual Southwest Transit Association Marketing Conference. Ms. Simank said METRO Transit won first place for the “Red Line Lunch Trolley Campaign”, second place for the “Eddy Grand Opening” and third place for the “Adventure Line Trolley Route”. She thanked METRO Transit for all the hard work they do for The City.
Ms. Simank reminded everyone to vote next Tuesday, December 14, to decide the hotel/motel tax issue.

Ms. Simank informed Council that the Charter and State law establishes Oklahoma City Council seats as non-partisan positions. She asked that partisanship be kept out of the upcoming appointments to the City Council.
Ms. Johnson agreed with Ms. Simank on the importance of keeping non-partisan status for City Council appointments.
Ms. Johnson asked the City Council to consider sending our Youth Councilors to the National League of Cities Conference next year. She pointed out that our youth councilors are top notch, would represent Oklahoma City favorably, and would gain a lot from attending this event.
Ms. Johnson distributed a “Guidelines for Effective Human Relations Commissions” booklet to each member of the City Council.
Ms. Johnson presented the James C. Howland Municipal Enrichment Silver Award for the “Restoring a River – the MAPS North Canadian River Project” to Mayor Mick Cornett. Ms. Johnson said this award is given to communities that preserve and/or enrich a high quality of life. She thanked Kathie Wrights for submitting Oklahoma City’s river projects to be considered for the Howland Award.

Mr. Couch displayed a brochure entitled “Don’t Miss the Vote!” which addresses the hotel/motel tax issue. He said copies of the brochure are available through the Public Information and Marketing Office.
