(September 14, 2007) - The Oklahoma City Council has enacted a temporary ban on billboard permits.
The adopted ordinance, passed during the September 11 council meeting, places a 180-day ban on billboard permits issued by Oklahoma City’s Public Works Department.
During the temporary ban, a Billboard Advisory Committee composed of five citizens and two council members will be appointed by Mayor Mick Cornett to review billboards effects of the City’s appearance and future growth.
The committee will also work with city staff and members of the billboard industry to review future regulations and develop recommendations to Council.
The new ordinance does not apply to existing billboards or permits.
In 2004 Council approved a billboard ban prohibiting new billboards along sections of I-40 and I-235 near downtown Oklahoma City. The 2004 ban also applies to the new path the Crosstown will take when it is relocated.
