Oklahoma City presented with Livability Award from U.S. Conference of Mayors

(October 3, 2007) - Mayor Mick Cornett was presented with the Outstanding Achievement award from the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Waste Management on Wednesday, October 3 for his leadership role in MAPS for Kids.

Jocelyn Bogan with the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Barbara Nussa with Waste Management presented the City Livability Award during a ceremony kicking off a $1.7 million MAPS for Kids renovation at Horace Mann Elementary School.

“Mayor Kirk Humphreys and School Board Chairman Cliff Hudson deserve the Livability Award more than anyone.  Their partnership and commitment to improving schools for children throughout the metro is at the foundation of MAPS for Kids,” said Mayor Cornett.

The Livability Award was first announced at the U.S. Conference of Mayors held in Los Angeles in June.  For 28 years this award has recognized mayoral leadership for developing and implementing programs that improve the quality of life in America’s cities.

Judges were former mayors that selected the cities from a pool of over 200 applicants based on mayoral leadership, creativity and innovation, and broad impact on the quality of life for residents.

MAPS for Kids is a 10-year, $700 million project to improve public schools in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area.  The program is a partnership between the City of Oklahoma City, The Oklahoma City Public School District and 23 suburban school districts located within the City limits.
