Free pruning workshop to focus on ice damage, repair

(January 17, 2008) - Citizens still worried about damage caused to their trees from last month’s ice storm are invited to attend a free workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 1 at the Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center, 3400 NW 36th Street.

“Practical Pruning” will cover the basics of pruning techniques and timing, including the best way to care for and maintain ice-damaged trees.  It will also provide citizens with information regarding hardy tree varieties that can withstand Oklahoma’s severe weather.

“Sound pruning practices cannot only help restore damaged trees, but can also be used as a preventative against future damage from ice or wind,” said Louis Scott, horticulturalist for the Will Rogers Gardens and Arboretum.  “This workshop will give people the opportunity to understand how simple regular tree pruning and maintenance can be and how important it is to tree viability.”

“Practical Pruning” is one in a series of free monthly workshops offered by the City’s Parks & Recreation Department.  Class size is limited so advanced registration is required by calling 405 943-0827.  The Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center is located on the SW corner of Grand Boulevard and NW 36 Street, just west of I-44.
