Myriad Botanical Gardens’ annual ladybug release set for May 8

(April 29, 2008) - It’s a bug eat bug world on Thursday, May 8 when the Myriad Botanical Gardens releases over 70,000 ladybugs into the Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory.

Visitors are welcome to join in on the creepy-crawly fun starting at 9:30 a.m., with paid admission.  Individual containers of ladybugs are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

“It’s a great educational opportunity for kids,” said Janet Latham, Myriad Gardens naturalist.  “Not only do they get to see and handle the ladybugs up close, they also learn about the important role these insects play in the natural world.”

The annual event also includes a variety of buggy crafts for kids and an opportunity to show off their favorite polka-dotted attire.

New to Bug Out this year are interactive children’s activities in the North Lobby.  The activities will take place at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. and will include an insect-themed reading and an art project.  There is no additional charge for these activities; however, registration is required by calling (405) 297-3995.

Ladybug releases are part of the Gardens’ Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program; a safe, environmentally friendly method of removing harmful insects without using equally harmful chemicals.

According to Latham, these polka-dotted, pest-eaters don’t take their job lightly.  A fully-grown ladybug can consume up to 100 aphids each day. Even when they are in the larvae stage, they can eat 20 aphids a day.

Registration is not required to attend, but participants are encouraged to arrive early.

The Myriad Botanical Gardens is located at Reno and Robinson in downtown Oklahoma City.  Crystal Bridge hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.  Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students and $3 for children 4 to 12.  Call 297-3995 for information or visit www.myriadgardens.com.
