(November 9, 2009) - October was a record breaking month for adoptions at Oklahoma City’s Animal Shelter. In all, 777 pets were placed in new homes, which included 510 dogs, 242 cats and 25 other animals such as ferrets and livestock.
“We are pleasantly surprised that adoption rates have been steadily increasing over the past few months,” said Shelter Manager Catherine English. “The word is out that the shelter is a clean, comfortable and affordable place to find a pet companion.”
On average, 450 animals are housed at the shelter at any given time. Approximately 25 percent of the shelter dogs are purebreds.
Thanks to new technology, people shopping for a new pet or searching for a lost pet can use the City’s Web site, www.okc.gov/animalwelfare to easily locate animals by preferences such as animal type, gender, age, size and color.
The Shelter is currently running a $25 special on adoption fees.
“This is the best value in the City,” said English. “All adopted dogs and cats are vaccinated against contagious diseases, have been given flea and tick treatment, are dewormed, and are spayed or neutered. In addition, dogs have been treated for heartworms, if they test positive for the disease. There isn’t anywhere else in the region where you can get these services for this price.”
The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is open from noon to 5:45 p.m. every day except holidays at SE 29 & Bryant, 1.5 miles east of Interstate 35.
