Police Department MenuSpecial Protection Events & Emergency Response
The Special Protection Events & Emergency Response (SPEER) Unit consists of one lieutenant and two sergeants who are responsible for handling special events, dignitary protection, and V.I.P escorts. The Special Events Unit serves as the primary liaison between the Police Department and event organizers. Depending on the size and location of a special event, a couple of officers or hundreds of officers may be needed to help monitor the special event while keeping the City moving and making sure everyone safely has a good time.
SPEER coordinates the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, Independence Day celebrations, Opening Night, parades, fun runs, festivals, civic celebrations and more. The unit reviews all City permits for functions involving a City street. The unit has final authority to decide times, routes, and roads to be closed.
SPEER's goal is to maintain public safety and security for everyone involved in special events.
