CITY MANAGER
AUGUST 15, 1946 TO JANUARY 3, 1950
FEBRUARY 1, 1955 TO JUNE 1, 1957
Acting twice as City Manager, William Gill, Jr. gave six years of service to the development of Oklahoma City. In his first term, he set up a veterans’ center to serve veterans of the World Wars like himself. Bill Gill also led a campaign for a new sewage system through approval of a $15 million bond issue.
As the youngest City Manager in Oklahoma City history (age 31), Gill was named Outstanding Young Man of 1946 by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Though he was no longer the youngest City Manager, Gill approached his second term with just as much vivacity and helped initiate one of the greatest projects in OKC history. The annexation of ’58-’59 saw the addition of multiple suburbs, and culminated in the City becoming the largest city (by area) in the United States at the time.
Gill’s grandson, Scott Meacham, went on to serve as the State Treasurer of Oklahoma. Gill is commemorated by a statue at the State Fairgrounds.
