Nelson Button

Nelson Button was born in Indiana Button helped plan and develop the community of Meade, Kansas. He came to Oklahoma City immediately after the Land Run of 1889, and was involved in establishing the City’s provisional government.  He was appointed by the County Commissioners to the Board of Trustees chaired by D.W. Gibbs and tasked with setting up the provisional government.  Button was elected to represent Ward 1, and served as a City Council member for three years before being elected Mayor.

During his term Button added the first edition to the legal boundaries of the City, the Military Addition, allowing the City to expand to the east.

Soon after his term ended, Button left for prospects in Denver. He died on his Utah farm in 1914.
