Utilities Department MenuChecking Your Credit
The Oklahoma City Utilities Department uses the services of TransUnion to run a "soft check" on all customers who set up service with us. Read more about the program below.
Why are you running my credit with Transunion?
One of our highest priorities is to maintain the protection of our customers’ identity. The Utilities Department reports bad debt information to credit reporting agencies. The Federal Trade Commission “Furnisher Rule” requires us to ensure the accuracy of the information we furnish by validating the identity of the customers we serve. By following these regulations, we are helping protect customers from others possibly using their identity to obtain services and affecting their credit records.
If we are unable to verify your identity and run a soft credit check, you will be assessed a security deposit at the maximum amount of $120 for residential premises and it will not be refunded or applied to your account until you end services. Additionally, we are unable to automatically qualify you for some of our customer assistance programs.
Will you be running my credit through any other credit bureau such as Equifax or Experian?
We are only contracted to run credit checks through Transunion.
Will there be any negative impact to my credit?
The Oklahoma City Utilities Department will only complete a “soft inquiry” to your credit report. This is a soft credit check, which means it will not have any impact to your credit report or score.
I disagree with the results of your credit inquiry. What can I do?
Utilities Customer Service does not handle any disputes of the Transunion credit check results. You will need to contact Transunion to initiate a dispute. We can proceed with starting services with the results we received.
What do I do if my credit report is frozen?
Freezing your credit report is not controlled by Utilities Customer Service. This is a service you enrolled into to protect your identity. As a result, we are unable to obtain any information from Transunion. We would be happy to proceed with the move in and assess a security deposit in the maximum amount of $120 or you can contact Transunion to unlock your credit file and call us back. By moving forward with a locked credit file will require us to hold your deposit until you end services with us.
How do I unfreeze my credit report?
According to the Transunion website, you can use their self-service by visiting Transunion.com or you can contact them by phone.
I moved in prior to Utilities starting Transunion checks. How can I qualify for reduced price solid waste services?
If you believe you would qualify for a lower rate on your solid waste services, you can contact Utilities Customer Service by sending us a message on our portal at okcutilities.com or by calling us at 405-297-2833 Monday through Friday, 8a – 5p. We will send you the form to fill out and submit back with your most recent federal tax forms for us to review for eligibility.
What number do I call to contact Transunion?
If you have questions about your credit, freezing or unfreezing, or to dispute your results, you can contact Transunion by calling 1-833-395-6938 Monday through Friday, 7a – 10p CST, or you can visit www.transunion.com.
