Planning Department MenuOKC Action Plan: Transportation
The American Public Transit Association recommends aligning transit service with social service destinations, free or reduced fares and partnerships with businesses for funding. Eliminating transportation barriers unlocks easier access to services, employment and healthcare.
6. Transportation
- 6.A: Establish a Microtransit Program
- 6.B: Expand Bus Pass Program
Connecting people experiencing homelessness with housing assistance and other services requires a robust public transportation system. Fare-free routes and partnerships with service organizations can expand access to transit at relatively low cost. Read the entire section here (pages 74-77 of the full report).
6.A: Establish a Microtransit Program
Microtransit (an IT-enabled, private, multi-passenger transportation service) can serve people with large SUVs, vans and shuttle buses on a smaller and more flexible scale than bus service and similar transit. App-based systems can provide on-demand services as a public transportation solution that specifically serves people experiencing homelessness.
OKC's strategy is to work with EMBARK and other relevant stakeholders to secure funding and develop a microtransit program that will address the transportation needs of people experiencing homelessness.
6.B: Expand Bus Pass Program
People experiencing homelessness who have little or no income have difficulty getting to appointments for physical and mental healthcare, employment services and work. Free fare programs are an inexpensive way to help connect them to those critical services.
This report calls for a streamlined reduced fare application process and less restrictive funding sources for bus pass programs.
