City of OKC
Planning Department MenuHow to Start a Commercial District
For over 20 years, the City of Oklahoma City has been working with business and property owners to transform their areas, attracting more patrons to work, shop and play in their district.
First, let’s get acquainted and talk about what you want to accomplish.
- Planning staff will facilitate a meeting with your board, stakeholders and/or steering committee and ask you to complete a District Review and Stakeholder Survey (PDF).
- Next steps may include an approach to make stronger connections with your surrounding neighborhoods and districts, create a District Plan (PDF), or start a Merchant Association (PDF) or Business Improvement District (PDF).
- Merchant Associations and Business Improvement Districts are different, learn why (PDF).
We suggest you make time to go to events in your districts or other Commercial Districts. Also consider making a connection with the district directors and board members for expert advice on your area – we will help make the introductions.
